We’ve all heard it before – “Sit up straight!”
However, sometimes this seemingly simple task is easier said than done. While posture is such an important part of overall health, it is something that is constantly pushed to the backburner.
If you are experiencing back pain, there is a good chance it may be due to your posture. Sitting and standing with good spinal alignment can help prevent back pain, and one major focus of Pilates is to teach patients how to practice proper posture techniques. A seasoned Pilates professional can help you understand the importance of posture and give you valuable training to help you achieve it every day.
But don’t fret if you are currently suffering from back pain. We can help you discover the benefits of having a good posture and eliminating most of your pain within weeks. Some of our clients have recorded a significant improvement even after the first session with us!
This 45-minute postural and gait analysis online session is ideal for everybody, whether they have a healthy body or not. However, if you are currently experiencing pain, it is highly recommended that you perform a postural analysis to determine if your pain is actually coming from bad posture or from something that would require medical attention. Once we complete your assessment, we will identify the best exercise routine to help you achieve your optimal posture and tips to maintain it for the long term. If your posture is due to other, more structural issues, or due to medical conditions, we will endeavour to refer you to a suitable medical professional to assist you further.
Just take a look at how poor posture causes back pain:
When your posture is incorrect, areas of stress may develop within your muscle tissue, spinal joints, and discs. You can relieve them once you correct the offending posture. Or they can continue to accumulate, weakening the affected structure, for example:
· Prolonged hunching while standing or sitting cause your back, core, and abdominal muscles to become strained and painful.Reducing their blood supply, and developing stiffness and weakness in the trunk and lower back.It also restricts your lungs and reduces your lung capacity (you might find you have difficulty breathing).
· An unsupported sitting position places a small forward bend on the spine. Over time, this may place a load on the lower spinal discs. If you abuse it through heavy lifting or an incorrect movement, might cause disc herniation (aka slipped disc).
· An incorrect-lifting technique can cause your lumbar disc to herniate. This leads to pain in the lower back and/or radiating pain into your leg through a nearby spinal nerve.
· Working on a laptop or reading while lying on your belly can cause your lower back and hip to extend. This alters the dynamics of the lower spinal curve and puts too much pressure on your lower back.
It takes less effort to maintain correct posture than trying to fix an incorrect posture. Changing from a habitual incorrect posture may take time and constant awareness but you will get there. Through the years, we have helped thousands of people achieve their optimal postural blueprint and live healthy, happy lives, pain-free!
Our aim is to help you achieve and maintain your correct posture for the long term, not just a Quick Fix!
So how does correct posture relieve back pain?
Your spine is designed to operate in a very specific way. When you move, sit, and stand in ways that disrupt the correct operation of your spine, you may eventually create undesirable problems over time.
With my help, you can practice good posture and work with your spine in order to minimize your back pain. With over 15 years of Pilates teaching experience and a Diploma in Osteopathic Manual Practice, I will provide you with educational resources for good posture, and will help you discover several healthy movement patterns for relieving pain.
What does maintaining good posture help you achieve?
1.It encourages strength and flexibility.
If you have struggled with poor posture for a while, there is a good chance that it will be difficult to maintain proper posture in the beginning. It may take some time to gain the strength and flexibility necessary to keep your ideal posture. Fortunately, the work you do with us to achieve your physical goals will lead to greater overall fitness. The stronger and more flexible you get, the less likely you are to suffer from back pain on a regular basis.
2. It improves function for all activities.
When we think of posture, many of us picture an image of static positions – such as sitting at a desk or standing up straight. However, proper posture can be (and should be) incorporated into everything we do.
In fact, when we teach Pilates, we will look at your dynamic posture all the time. That is – how are you sitting? How are you standing? How are you lying down? How are you walking? How are you working on our Pilates equipment?
The improved posture you adopt in each activity will lessen the wear and tear you put on your spine, which minimizes the risk of developing back pain from these activities.
3. It promotes circulation and improves breathing
When you maintain proper spinal alignment, your veins are not constricted by the pressure of your vertebrae. Your spine contains numerous components that all require good circulation, in order to operate correctly and regenerate from damage.
Once you learn to open your chest, you will find you can breathe better and your lungs will redevelop better capacity, hence you will be able to increase the oxygen levels into your blood, which will enhance your wellbeing in many other ways.
When I guide you through specific Pilates exercises to help with your posture, your alignment will return to the intended shape required for optimal circulation giving you an optimal blueprint for movement.
4. It prevents pain caused by improper lifting.
Good posture is a vital component of lifting objects without injury. This doesn’t have to be restricted to lifting at work. What about when you lift your children, your shopping, your big basket of wet clothing from the washing machine? When you lift with proper postural care and awareness, there is a much lesser chance of injury.
I will teach you the correct lifting posture and guide you through some exercises to clarify the right posture for lifting!
5. It avoids harmful postural imbalances
The ways in which you use your spine can actually cause changes to your anatomy. The stress caused by sitting hunched can eventually lead to damage of your muscles, joints, spinal discs, and the nerves and blood vessels that travel through your spine. Fortunately, in many cases the damage can be reversed, if you engage in targeted exercises and learn how to maintain proper posture.
